Navratri 2019 is commencing from 29th September and will end on 7th October. In this blog, I will tell you easy to cook and delicious Navratri Food Recipes.
Navratri is one of the greatest festivals which is celebrated twice a year across India. During this, devotees worship 9 avatars of Maa Durga on each day of Navratri.
Nine avatars of Goddess Durga are –
- Maa Shailputri – Worshipped on 1st day
- Mata Chadrakanta – Worshipped on 3rd day
- Mata Brahmacharini – Worshipped on 2nd day
- Kushmanda Maa – Worshipped on 4th day
- Skanda Mata – Worshipped on 5th day
- Mata Katyayani – Worshipped on 6th day
- Maa Kalaratri – Worshipped on 7th day
- Mata Maha Gowri – Worshipped on 8th day
- Mata Siddhi Datri – Worshipped on 9th day
Navratri is celebrated in different ways in different communities. In North and Western India, devotees fast for 9 continuous days while no fasting is observed in South India.
In south India, people do worship of deities of goddess Durga while in Gujrat people celebrate it through the Garba. Ahmedabad is referred to as Tomorrowland during Navratris.
What should be and What should not be eaten during Navratri –
Flours used –
- Kuttu ka atta
- Singhare ka atta
- Sama ke chawal ka atta
- Arrowroot flour
- Rajgira ka atta
Vegetables that can be eaten-
- Arbi (Colocasia)
- Sweet potatoes
- Black salt / Rock salt
- Green chilies
- Cardamom ( Elaichi)
- Black pepper
- Cumin seeds
With a limited number of ingredients, it’s very hard to eat delicious food but no worries, I am sharing delicious Navratri food recipes which are easy to cook –
Sabudana Kheer also referred to as Sago Payasam is a popular sweet dish eaten across India. I am sharing the Navratri Food Recipes of Sabudana Kheer.
Recipe for 4 servings –
- 1 liter Milk
- 1 cup Sabudana
- 1 cup Sugar
- 1 teaspoon elaichi
- 1/4 cup almonds
- 1/4 cup raisins (kish mish)
Step 1 – Soak Sabudana in water for an hour.
Step 2 – Heat milk in a large saucepan. Add sugar and stir it until the sugar dissolves. Low the flame when the milk starts to boil and keep the milk until it reduces to half of its original quantity.
Step 3 – Boil 2-1/2 cups of water in another pan and then add soaked Sabudana to it. Boil until Sabudana gets cooked.
Step 4 – If the milk has condensed, add boiled Sabudana and cardamom powder to it. Heat it for about 10 minutes on a low flame.
Step 5 – Heat ghee in a small pan and add almonds and raisins to it and stir it for a few minutes. Turn off the heat and add it to the Sabudana kheer.
Step 6 – Serve the delicious Sabudana Kheer in bowls.
Rajgira Paneer Paratha is an Indian food specially made during fasts/Navratris.
For 3-4 servings –
- 1 cup grated paneer
- 1 cup Rajgira floor
- 2 boiled and mashed potatoes
- 1 teaspoon jeera(cumin seeds)
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- 2 finely chopped green chilies
- 1/2 teaspoon black peppercorns
- Cooking oil / Ghee
- Rock salt as per taste
Step 1 – Mix all the ingredients in a mixing bowl.
Step 2 – Add water to the bowl accordingly to form a dough.
Step 3 – Divide the dough into equal parts and roll it like you roll a simple paratha.
Step 4 – Take a flat pan and cook rolled paratha with ghee or cooking oil on it for 2-3 minutes.
Step 5 – Serve your Navratri special paratha with ghee or butter.
Singhada Sheera is a must sweet dish to have during Navratri or any fasting.
Recipe for 2 servings , for more servings increase the ingredients accordingly.
- 2 cup Singhada flour
- 2 tablespoon ghee
- 1 cup of sugar
- 4 tablespoon powdered cardamom
- 2 teaspoon flaked almonds
- 2 teaspoon flaked pistachios.
Step 1 – Heat ghee in a large pan and add singhada atta to it. Cook it on low flame until the flour changes its color to light brown. Stir continuously.
Step 2 – Add 2 cups of warm water to the flour on low flame and stir until the water gets fully absorbed.
Step 3 – Add sugar to the pan and mix well. Keep stirring on low flame for 3-4 minutes.
Step 4 – Switch off the flame, add powdered cardamom and mix well. Garnish it with almonds and pistachios and serve hot in a bowl.
Aloo Kadhi Recipe
Have a great lunch with this delicious Aloo Kadhi during Navratri.
I am sharing the Navratri food recipes for 4 servings, you can change the amount according to your needs.
- 1/2 kg boiled and mashed potatoes
- 1/2 cup Singhare ka atta
- 2 tablespoon rock salt
- 1/4 tablespoon chili powder
- Cooking oil
- 1/2 cup yogurt
- 1/2 tablespoon cumin seeds
- 2 whole red chilies
- 1 tablespoon chopped ginger
- 1/2 tablespoon powdered coriander
- 4 cups of water
Step 1 – Mix mashed potatoes , Singhare ka atta , chilli powder, and rock salt to form a thick batter.
Step 2 – Separate 1/4th of the mixture, rest will be used to make pakoras.
Step 3 – Heat the oil in a pan and add spoonful mixture into the oil. now Lower the flame and fry it until it turns golden.
Step 4 – Drain the pakoras on a newspaper, tissue or anything you have.
Step 5 – Add yogurt to the remaining mixture with water accordingly to form a smooth paste.
Step 6 – Heat 2 tablespoon of oil in a pan, add cumin seeds, red chilies, and ginger in it. Saute a little.
Step 7 – Add yogurt mixture, salt and coriander powder to this pan and allow it to boil. After boiling, heat it on low flame until it thickens a bit and keeps stirring to avoid scorching.
Step 8 – Add pakoras and heat the mixture on low flame for a few minutes. The dish is ready, serve it hot by garnishing with coriander leaves.
Sama ke Chawal ki Tikki
This is another delicious food which you can have as a breakfast or evening snack during fasting days or Navratri.
Recipe for 2 servings –
- 1 cup Sama ke chawal (Barnyard Millet)
- 2 boiled potatoes
- Rock salt
- 1 chopped green chilly
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin seed powder
- 1-1/2 cup water
- Chopped Coriander
Step 1 – Soak Sama ke chawal in water for about an hour.
Step 2 – After soaking, cook sama ke chawal on low flame in a half-covered pan in 1-1/2 cup of water.
Step 3 – Let it cool for some time.
Step 4 – Mix cooked chawal with mashed potatoes, salt, green chilies, coriander, and cumin seeds powder to form a Tikki dough.
Step 5 – Heat cooking oil in a frying pan
Step 6 – Make round balls from Tikki mixture and flatten it a little.
Step 7 – Fry the tikkis in the pan until it turns golden. Keep turning the tikkis side by side to cook it completely.
Step 8 – Your delicious snack is ready, serve it hot in a plate.
